We're shortly going to be making an Android app available on Google Play that will allow you to use your Android device as a PTS barcode scanner using the camera.

The app is intended as a proof-of-concept or a curiosity more than anything else; I would suggest your existing scanners will still be best suited for heavy usage! However if you do have a genuine use for it then be our guest. Any feedback you can give us will be great as we continue moving slowly towards getting the portering/delivery app out there.

I'll update this thread when the app is live. Any questions or feedback, please use this thread.

Interesting development, with more use of the mobile devices and BOYD.

How about an IOS App also, with these devices being easier to manage in large organisations.

I'd have bet good money the first replies would have been about iOS ;) it's on the radar but Android is the focus at the moment as our users have suggested it's the most popular choice amongst their managers at the minute. Once the delivery app is released on Android (which we expect early next year for the record) we'll probably give iOS a look if the demand is there.

Anyway, the scanner app has now been submitted to Google Play and should be up in a few hours.

Here you go everybody:

Just to reiterate, this isn't the full delivery app (yet), this will simply enable you to use your Android phone as a wireless barcode scanner. However as it uses a few of the same concepts behind-the-scenes your feedback will be invaluable even if you just download it to have a look.

Thanks!

Hi,

The app is quote good. It scans from many different angles and its quick on my android phone. Is this going to be fed into a fully blown android version of the delivery app as that would be amazing.

Oh the setup was really easy but from a barcode scanner perspective a handheld scanner is still cheaper than the cheapest android device.

Yep, the plan is for an Android version of the delivery app to be out early next year. The old Windows PDAs are long overdue retirement if you ask me!

Yep, you'll need to be connected to the hospital network. The URL setting is indeed the same setting you enter for the barcode scanners, and it will always take the format of http://YourPTSServer/PTSWeb/PTSCommsServer.asmx

To find out the name of your PTS server just access your PTS home page and look at the URL in the address bar.

Hi Marc,

We are finding it difficult with our IT to get any Android devices on to the secured hospital wireless network as these devices are not encrypted, apparently. However, they are more then happy with iOS devices. So please let us know when an iOS app can be expected. It would further benefit us as we use iPads across the trust for JAC.

That's a pity, unfortunately we're a long way away from announcing anything for iOS. Out of interest do your IT department have any plans to allow modern Android devices onto the network since they are encrypted? As far as I'm aware it's only the oldest Android devices which cannot be encrypted.

Hi Marc,

I would just like to add my weight to an iOS app, my trust only supports iOS and will not support Android device, they have invested heavily in iOS this and I know of no plans to change. So anything that can be used on an iOS device would be great for us.

Many thanks for the feedback. All of this is being noted.

Just to be clear, when you say the trust don't support Android, do you mean they have singled out Android as a platform that is not allowed to join the wireless network? Or is it support in the sense that they won't help you join it to the wireless network?

Hi
Is the IOS scanner app suitable for delivery tracking and signature capture on iPad Air?

The full delivery tracking app is coming soon. The iOS scanner app is a way of using your iOS device as a normal barcode scanner and requires a constant connection so is not particularly suited to recording deliveries, and certainly cannot take signatures.

Android app set up question
PTS server connection details = To find out the name of your PTS server just access your PTS home page and look at the URL in the address bar.
Domain Name = ?
Domain Username = ?
Domain Password = ?

Are any of the domain settings in the TMS application settings?

The domain settings refer to your hospital domain. If you have to log in to a domain to access your wireless network you have to enter your domain credentials in those fields in the Android app, or it won't be able to connect.
